The Greater Manchester Police Museum is a small, mainly volunteer-led museum founded in 1981. They participated in the ‘Sustainability Leadership for Museum Professionals’ programme run by Greener Museums in 2009/10. Before they joined the programme, they did not have a sustainability plan.
They invested £7000 in installing LED lighting which has since saved them £2000 a year (a 66% reduction) and benefitted their collection items due to its lower intensity and heat. They also installed a new boiler which has reduced their gas bill by £1000 a year.
These days the museum is still thinking green, and their visitors are involved as well. They have recently put together a ‘Go Green’ box of loan items for school groups.
